ZC in 4wd Civic wagon???
This is a question I've had in the back of my head for a while now. Is it possible to put a ZC in a 4wd Civic wagon? I think that would be a nice swap.. and then put a turbo on it.. now that's a mad sleeper. Anybody know if this will work? Oh, by the way, those things did come in 5-speed didn't they?
Civicwagonman owns one of these chassis. Id IM him. I have herd many rumors that the only engine that fits is the d series. Unfortunately I do not know first hand though. I hope to some day

yes, ZC works because since it uses an intermediate shaft, it has the extra bolt holes for the 4wd system..
no, you can't do that much to them because it's not a full time 4wd system, it just engages when it notices you're slipping.. more than a few hard launches will make the "center" diff explode, which is located inside the transmission and take out the rest of your transmission..
they were available with 6 speeds.. don't get too excited, the first gear doesn't get you very far, 10-15mph at most.. it's just for getting out of slippery situations..

the trannies in the 4wd are stronger than their 2wd counterparts. I believe civicwagonman has a d16z6 and turbo and hes said hes beaten a few stock stangs. I've heard the whole system (4wd/tranny) can't hold much more than 170 hp, which i don't know if thats true but i plan to find out with my wagon. I've got a honda manual on the 2wd and 4wd civic wagons if you need any info or schematics or anything.
p.s. I've done a couple launches at 6.5-7k and i haven't had a problem but im also only pushing 112 hp (sohc zc baby)

Have a look at my ZC 4WD wagon: http://wagon.crx.ca
The one thing that doesn't work out is that the proper ZC 4-2-1 exhust manifold does not fit with the 4WD. The passenger-side "2" part of the downpipe goes right where the rear hookup is on the transmission. I had to use the D16A6 exhaust manifold and its downpipe. Even a Civic Si downpipe doesn't fit. I did come across a guy who can me a custom 4-2-1 header. I just haven't given him the design yet.

Now, one could install a CR-V engine and hydraulic transmission into a wagon, but would have to do the hydraulic clutch conversion. We're doing a hydro clutch on a CRX that has a CR-VTEC and ITR LSD tranny. Since the the CR-V tranny would have linkage and the wagon is shift-by-cable, some changes would be needed here. Also, getting a manual transmission from a CR-V is going to be difficult as it's rare.
from everything i've researched, the transfer case and diff will hold up to 210hp. not sure if that was flywheel or wheel hp though. the transmission itself has much larger parts inside, looks more like a b-series trans. I tried to swapa higher 5th into mine and the shaft was alot bigger. wish I had a b trans sitting around to try. The viscous joint allows for 3% slippage before it locks. on dry pavement you really can't feel it working, but i'm only at 5psi right now. looking to up it to 10psi after christmas. we'll see how long stuff lasts then!!
oh yea, if anyone has info on the crv trannies, I'd like to know more about them, as I would like to attempt a b-series awd one day.
