I painted my molding with acrylic paint.....now it's chipping. What did I do wrong?

 

isnt acrylic paint the **** you use on a canvas?

 

Why wouldn't you use regular car paint. That's probably what the problem is.

 

did you spray clear over it?

 

did you sand the part down first? did you use primer? also the right paint helps too. never heard of acrylic for car use. but i dont know alot about paint.

 

nah I didn't use primer....meybe I should have. I used car touch up spray paint. Do you think I should have used vynal paint or maybe clear coated over it?

next time lightly sand the part first, wash it, use plastikote adheisive promotion spray which you can get at any pepboys, then primer, then paint. I did mine a year ago and havent had them chip yet.

 

Nothing wrong with the paint you use..... (acrylic enamel is the cheap **** that maaco uses, don't have to clear coat when the do their cheap spray bombs)

Scuff sand it so it's no glossy (make sure it's smooth), prime it, sand it with light sand paper if it's rough, then give it a 3 or 4 *light* coats, let it dry about 20 minutes between coats. Then when it's almost dry clear coat it. First coat kindy heavy (but not running) then a couple more light coats till it looks even.

Then let it sit for a couple hours before ya drive around, some heat, or a hair dryer will help cure it if you're spray bombing outside. Just don't melt it hehe.

EDIT: Clear coat looks like *** till it's dry........ Too many coats of clear aren't bad, you just don't want runs....

yes, use primer, first lightly sand with light grit sandpaper, maybe 400 grit. then prime, paint, and clearcoat. that should be good.

 

Ive used Acylic paint on my valve covers and it looks great but it was a high temp acrylic made for motor parts. Wher your moldings rubber? If so that might of cause the flaking GOOD LUCK with your project

acrylic is the correct paint and there are several different kinds such as enamel and laquer. Enamel is the cheap single stage paint whihc is fairly easy to shoot. Acrylic Laquer was more common back in the day and is a little thinner but has a better gloss to it. Most shops are using urethane these days which is good. Go to your nearest PPG paint supplier and get a spray can mixed up of your factory color
