I got lucky this week...
In August I had a back-to-back Saturday-Sunday Solo 1 double event. Well, the clutch on my Civic disintegrated at the end of day 1. I stuck around for day 2 because i was the organizer (and goat to try an ITR on the track for the first time) and decided to try to drive the 50 miles home after the event with only about 5% grip on the clutch. I could release the clutch and the car would move, but with a tiny bit of pressure on the gas, it would slip like crazy.
I managed to get to about 50 mph (redline in 2nd) and hold that speed, but if I shifted into 3rd, i lost speed. Anyway, i'm going 50 mph in the right lane when everyone is going 70. A cop goes by me, then slows down to fall behind me and pulls me over.
Excessive sound: straight pipe, Supertrapp with a few discs in and no resonator (at redline). Then he sees the almost worn RA-1's and decided to send me to inspection. I'm thinking "alright! no ticket".
After a while, I realized that this was worse than a fine: my car would no longer be road registered in 48 hours. Even after the clutch repair, i would need a full stock exhaust system, probably to change my springs, put in sun visors (with my cage!) and OEM brake lines, etc. Plus I would have to pay like 150$ for the actual inspection. I was wishing it had just been a ticket.
Anyway, the car was not my daily driver, so I had the clutch fixed and managed to find a truck and trailer for my last event at the Glen.
This week i was finally supposed to take it to the guy who was gonna reinstall all the OEM parts (it took me a while to borrow all I needed). On a whim, I call the license bureau to check the status of my car. They say it's still registered. I go to the police to see what the police computer says: all is in order, no inspection notice... I call the provinical police and ask how this could have happened, he said my order was probably lost... and that i'd be surprised how often cops lose their ticket pads in the wind or something.
So basically, no ticket, no inspection, my car is still street legal and it has been this whole time. That brightened up my week. I've always loved being able to load up the car like a little minivan and drive to events, like real racers did in the 50's. The street legal racer lives on!
