any way to identify year of tranny?
without taking it off? i have a ZC tranny and i need to know the year so i can order a new clutch, it is my daily driver so i can't take it apart, count the splines and then get it back on just to order the kit (i've got 3 kids to watch over). So....is there a way to check the year w/o taking it off and counting splines?
Did the tranny come with your ZC engine? If so you can identify the year of the engine. The engine will have a stamp (ex. 89, 90, etc.) on the exhaust side of the head I can't remember exactly where it is but I think it is around the the #2 exhaust port.

no the engie didn't come with the tranny i got it afterward. on hte spline count, the only year that is differnt is the 88 right?
Right. The 88 has a 21 spline and the 89-91 uses a 20 spline. There is also a difference between the 89 and 90-91. The 89 use a 200mm disk and pressure plate while the 90-91 uses a 212mm disk and pp.
Why did honda have to make things so difficult for us 4th generation guys??

mistabone where ya at!
he's usually pretty easy to get a hold of on that site.
I'm not sure if ZC did the same thing as the us trannies did, but on the us trannies the ID tag would say PL3 / 1000 (or A000, or 3000) on the 20 spline models, but there's no "PL3" on the 21 spline models. as far as disk size, get a new 90/91 flywheel with your 90/91 clutch / pressure plate and you'll be covered.

actually the outer shell of the tranny only tells the model. (PL3-1000)Si, DX(PL3-A100), STD(PL3-????) etc.... unles u got all data and u can check the number tag off the tranny on their records...
anyways the only fair way to know wich year it is, its by looking at the input shaft of the tranny.. if it doesnt have any grooves its a 88, if it has 1 groove its a 89, and if it has 2 grooves its either 90-91.....

well i have figured out it is not an 88. my tranny has markings, but i still need to figure outif it is off a 89 or a 90-91. clutchsizes are different on those years, 89 is 200mm and 90-91 is 212mm.
i heard i can use a 89 disk (smaller) on the 90-91 disk, but not the other way around. so my best bet w/o taking the tranny apart would be to order the 89 disk and i'm kinda safe either way. if i have an 89 it's perfect, if i have a 90-91 i can still use it.
