Oil Dilemma
Can you go from using a fully synthetic to a regular oil?
I currently run a Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic, but am thinking about switching to a regular oil simply because I change it every 1500 miles and cannot keep spending $40 on oil. Synthetic is $8.00 a litre here.
I have only ran synthetic for about 5000 miles in my B16A, and dont think its too late the switch back.
Anyways is there any hard evidence that you cannot go from synthetic to regular, even after so little milage on the synthetic?
I simply cant afford the cost of the synthetic oil and change it soo often that I am not benefitting from a full synthetic.
Opinions welcome & appreciated
first off, why do you change it so often? do you track every weekend??
second, no there will be no problem. most problems stemming from synthetic oil use is due to it being used too early in the break in cycle, preventing the rings in the motor from fully seating. switching back doesn't hurt anything, but people think _that_ is the reason their motor uses oil instead of the real reason of the motor not being broken in properly. somebody posted an excellent link concerning engine break-in procedure, maybe they'll post it again or you can search for it.

I do this because my engine is a 92 and although scores good compression, it is a small price to pay to get maximum protection. I just cant afford parts and frequent fully synthetic oil changes, and when driven around ***** footed i will extend it to 2500 -3000 on a change. The fact is that it is rarely driven around lightly as the car isnt comfortable on the street and is only driven 10 - 20 miles per day on average, which are failry hard.
Also i have a feeling that the engine is winding down to its final stages. Valve adjustments are needed more frequent, and it leaks a bit of oil (not burns) due to a shitty oil pan and gasket.
Thats Why....
edit..
RJ. Thanks for the link. Its good

well as of now no i do not. I change it before and after coming back from the track as everyone should. I will probably track every 2 weeks in the summer and will religiously cahnge it as it is needed.

nate-who's engine has 180k+ and is driven 50+ miles a day every day on 600 and 700# springs.
:envy: not of the condition of your car, but that you only have to drive it 10-20 miles a day and you get to track it often enough to change the oil every 1500 miles.

And i havnt had large amount fo track time. Those numbers are what the car shoudl be doing. Not what it is at this moment. Havnt been to the track or autox course since july

Next year i will have much more time and will run every other weekend or so

Also the engine is still strong and will definetly last for a few more seasons, (hopefully) but maintenence is needed, and oil changing is one of them i like to do often.
Nothing better than warm oil running down your arm.
