For those of you that have painted your OEM Wheels.
What did you use to remove the clearcoat and clean the rim before you painted them? I remember something about aircraft strength cleaner? Where could I find soemthing like this? I want to take off my swirlies before snow gets here but, I want to paint a set of 95 GSR rims I have. I want to jump on the gumetal spraycan oem wheel bandwagon.
Also, a good way to keep from cleaning my rims during the winter.
I've used aircraft grade paint stripper, but it really isn't necessary. You can scuff up the clear coat with sandpaper to give the paint more tack. Try that. You do need to occassionally reapply paint though. Maybe every other season. It tends to chip off after a while.
1. Use aircraft coating remover 1 can for 2 wheels
2. Get ALL PAINT AND ALL CLEARCOAT OFF
3. Sand down with 300 grit wetsand paper
4. Spray with metal or automotive primer, 1 coat (avail at home depot, rustolium automotive primer, pic of a civic on front)
5. Spray with Wheel paint, (avail. at any auto part store)
6. Wetsand with 400 grit paper
7. Respray with Wheel paint
mine look great, this is how to do it.
