it is not bad for the motor or tranny... just harder on the brakes.
When we were driving to Expo 02, there was about a 5 minute coast going down the back of thouse mountains. Draft a big truck going down hill = kick *** gas millage
if you're at high rpms, and you all of the sudden put the clutch in to coast - that's not something "good"
You're not supposed to shift out of gear and coast, you take it out of gear when you are about to stop. This has been discussed a billion times..
It won't "hurt" your engine, but it's not good practice for a person who drives a stickshift.

I didnt hear not good for your engine... I heard you get worse gas mileage like that but have never researched and/or tried to prove that theory.
Coasting down a hill at 50mph and throwing it into 1st gear will have an effect on the motor and tranny but not while in neutral.

so what is the correct way to slow down to a stop?
I never had a problem using the brake pedal, but that's just me.
you use zero gas decelrating in gear (engine braking), you use a bit of gas in neutral...it's more efficient to leave the car in gear. It's about as bad for things as running the car is normally.
Well I used to think what you said was true Aleph but I don't know if this applies to all cars but in my dad's C-Coupe, I leave it in Neutral while coasting down a hill and the MPG meter definately goes way up compared to leaving it in gear.

use your brakes they are cheaper to replace than your engine
It's also illegal in Maryland to coast in neutral. I guess the theory is you dont have complete control of the car.

so coasting downhill is ok in nuetral but don't redline and hit the clutch in and let it drop down then right?

That's correct. Better watch out for those State boys in MD. They will zoom through traffic at 90 mph to get you for coasting in netural.

Actually, coasting in nuetral can harm an automatic transmission. However this being a Type R forum, it shouldn't be a concern. Seeing this posted in an Accord forum makes more sence, as the vast majority of them are auto.
The reason why it is illegal in many states is the fear that the car engine may stall while in nuetral, making control of the car more difficult without power assist steering or brakes. It, like so many other laws, is mostly stupid and built out of irrational fear.
