Default B16A in 1st gen CRX. No VTEC!

IM HAVING ISSUES WITH CODE 17 (SPEEDSENSOR) therefore I have no vtec. Its a cable trans so the speedo cable goes from the trans directly to the speedometer. Where do I wire this speedsensor thing to get vtec. I dont want to hardwire vtec to an rpm switch because its cutting off @ 7gs and im not getting the correct mapping from the ecu. I would much rather do it the right way. PLEASE HELP.

um shouldnt there be a plug on the wiring harness for the VSS?
if its plugged in your VSS could be toasted.

Ahh yes, we ran into the same problem, the guage cluster doesn't a have an electronic VSS, need to add one from an 88-91 Civic/CRX, or I think the HFs had electric VSS. Umm, let me find the guy who led me thru it... here it is http://tjshondas.20m.com/ or schmtj@ispec.com

If he doesn't get back to you, let me know and I'll dig up my notes from him. I bet he will, though, he's good people.

yep, he's right. The VSS that came in your jdm cable tranny is electronic. It would send a signal to the guage cluster which in turn sends it to the ecu. But, in stock form, your VSS is cable operated.

Either do 1 of 2 things: replace your electric VSS with your old cable one, or wire in a new guage cluster that uses electric VSS signal (JDM SiR, GSR, ITR). 99% will do the first one, it is a ton easier. I can't remember, you may need to switch gears between the two VSS's, compare them yourself and see if that makes sense. Hope that helps.

I agree.... When I did this swap on my friend 88 CRX we just used his DX's mechanical speed sensor ... About 2 weeks ago he ordered a JDM SiR-G cluster so i wired that up in there for him and now we are back to the electronic VSS... I didn't even send the signal wire back to the ECU because I chipped it awhile back as well... What ECU are you running??? Cuz I saw you say that you are using an rpm activated switch.... Just curious cuz a 7000rpm cutoff sounds like no VTM signal... i could be wrong... Peace

I think he'll be ok once he drops in the right vss. because his ecu is seeing no speed, vtec won't activate (ecu basically running like its in neutral). One of the requirements for vtec engagement is travelling 20mph. I think the ecu might rev limit him if vtec is not working. I'm not really sure though, I dont think I went that high when my vtec wasn't working. Try the new mechanical VSS and let us know if it works.

Yea, well i know that the VTEC won't engauge without a signal from the VSS indicating that the car is rolling... I'm sure you are right tho... Once he gets it he should be fine so i'm not that worried... I've pulled the VSS on cars before and they'll still rev all the way up to the revlimit but they won't engauge the VTEC... I know for a fact that if he is using a VTEC ECU and he doesn't have a signal going or there isn't physically the correct pressure the motor will cut out at ~7000rpm... Like i said just something to think about... Peace

no, unless you have a ton of time to waste wiring it up (seems like everyone has a problem too). Save time and money, use your VSS out of your old trans, or get one from another 4g civic. There's probably others that you could source from too (like the 90-91 tegs), but go with the 4g (88-91) civic for sure.

you still have that electronic VSS? If you would be interested in selling it when you get your cable one, I would be interested in buying it off of you.
