quick quaife install question regarding bearings (GSR)
OK i have the tranny(GSR) apart and i have the new type-r bearings on the quaife. so its ready to go in there. Now i had to remove the old bearing races for the stock gsr taper bearings. and behind them were 2 washers on one side and one on there other, all three were diffrent thicknes. Now as i under stand i remove all shins/washers untill all i have left is the case and the diff.
2: then i put the diff all the way in the lower half of tranny and then place the cover on and tighten the bolts.
3: now i use a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the bearing and the case right? reason i ask is cuase it seems like such a big gap as if i should have left one of the washers in there. what size gap is normally going to be there? give or take a bit? Ok then after i get the size of the gap do i buy a bearing that size? or do i devide the number by 2 and place one on each side? an help would be apriciated, thanks guys

Are the Type R bearings the same size as the GSR? You may not want to listen to my advice, but I did not measure the gap. I kept eveything in there and replaced the bearings. I have had no problems for 3K miles. My car had 60K miles on it when I did my Quaife. My Acura dealer was like man, don't worry about it, those don't wear like brake pads.....he he....so, I didn't. It felt fine when I put it back together, not too tight and not too loose.
Hmm....well, I got GSR bearings from Acura, and they were the same size as the old ones. After talking to my dealer service tech, I just asked myself, "How much could they have worn down to affect the tranny?" He did not seem to think it was an issue, but I guess it's possible there could be a bad tranny with really worn bearing shims. I just put my faith in Acura and didn't bother with it. Good luck.
I have access to ALLDATA so I will try to see tomorrow if I cant find the specs. Wouldnt it be easier to check the freeplay with a dial indicator, then add or remove shims?
The older GSR trannys came with the bearings in the casing, called race bearings. I think thats what they are called. The newer ones came with tappered roller bearings.
You can use either the ITR or the GSR, but I prefer the tapperd roller bearing. The only bad thing about the tappered is that its hard to reuse them and take them off with out damaging them.

One more thing, dont forget to take off the speedo gear off of the OEM differential.
Here are some pics I took of the install. http://turbomafia.com/Arturbo/quaife/
Also, I didnt measure the clearances between the case and bearing and I guarantee most people dont. I promise, you wont have any problems.

Well, from my experience, the older ITRs and GSRs came with tapered bearings (which are a PITA to set up). YOu have to set preload on them which makes them so hard. Preludes also use these bearings, which is why I know how hard they are to set up (my bro has a lude with a Quaife installed by us).
The newer GSRs and Rs came with Ball Bearings. They require no preload.
Do yourself a favor though, and buy yourself the factory service manual from Helm. It will tell you step by step how to do it. There should be very minimal clearence there, if any.

Ok guys your missing the point with this, it has nothing to do with the gsr bearings. read this and see what you guys think. i am using type-r bearings.

ok the upper gap between the diff and the casing is 1.397mm so do i need a shin that big to put in the top half of the tranny or would i devide this by 2 and order 2 sims one for each side?
