Ring filing ?'s
Posted this in the FI forum...anyone have any input?:
Was filing my rings today (F22b1 turbo app) and have 3 questions:
1) Does the ring labelled seperator in this pic get filed? There are no instructions for the expander/seperator ring. Damn thing is flimsy and doesnt want to fit in the cylinder to allow measuring. Does its geometry account for thermal expansion and not need filing?
Heres the info I have:
2) All the oil rails were all too big >.015" prior to any filing...ranged from .016 to .026". The instructions say minimum gap is .015" is this too big? Do I need a smaller size?
3) The ring gap alignment info does not match my honda service manual. Do I use this one or the info in my manual. The manual states not to align any gaps on the thrust surfaces, yet the JE/SRP info says to....
Manual:
JE/SRP:
Which would you use?
Looking for guidance.

Only the top two rings get filed. The oil control rings and "separator" don't get filed. When installing the rings, make sure that the labeled side goes up towards the top of the piston.
Also, look at this post for more info:

I would use the manual for the ring placement-I noticed the same discrepancy that you did-I would not use JE's ring placement. (I am also running JE's-and I used the manual's ring placement.)
