Ring Filing Questions....
Was filing my rings today (F22b1 turbo app) and have 3 questions:
1) Does the ring labelled seperator in this pic get filed? There are no instructions for the expander/seperator ring. Damn thing is flimsy and doesnt want to fit in the cylinder to allow measuring. Does its geometry account for thermal expansion and not need filing?
Heres the info I have:
2) All the oil rails were all too big >.015" prior to any filing...ranged from .016 to .026". The instructions say minimum gap is .015" is this too big? Do I need a smaller size?
3) The ring gap alignment info does not match my honda service manual. Do I use this one or the info in my manual. The manual states not to align any gaps on the thrust surfaces, yet the JE/SRP info says to....
Manual:
JE/SRP:
Which would you use?
Looking for guidance.

I used the JE gap instructions for the positions of the gaps (ignoring the service manual) and did not file any of my oil rings.......including the waffle ring that goes in between the two oil rings.
Never file any of the oil rings, only file the top and second ring. In my opinion the JE suggestion for ring gap comes up a little tight but I guess it all depends on how hard you push the motor.
Thanks for the info.
Called raceng.com (supplier) and asked them if the oil ring "seperator" should have any gap. They said yes (.015"). I asked them if I should have to file it they said no.
When I put that ring in the bore, it pushes itself out of shape due to it being too large.
Still confused. May just have to put it in and hope for the best.

Top rings started at .006" filed them to .020"
Second rings went from .006" to .015".
The oil rings range from .016 to .024" (havnt filed any of these either since the gap recommendation is .015").
So with the top two I would assume I have the correct ones, but the oil rings and the seperator have me wondering.

In old chevy blocks etc. we never touched the wavy oil ring. And now for my curious question...why would the top manual state to never position a gap at the thrust points of the piston, while the other instuctions put the two compression rings in those spots???
Notice the JE paper says MINIMUM of .015. Basically the upper and lower rails just support the center piece and clearance not critical as long as you don't put the gaps right over each other.
