Default ATTN: Tony1 & Earl.... Final drive options

I have a spare S4C tranny out of a 92-00 SIR/CTR it has a 4.40 final drive. I would like to put a 4.15 final drive in it .
Do you guys know of any options without spending more than $1200.00 ? At 9000 rpm in fourth gear it would trap about 144mph.

This setup would be perfect and should show great numbers in the 1/4.

Thanks in advance.

Get Taller Slicks?

Gearing with Slicks is so much cheaper...

24.5 " slicks is all I can fit with factory fenders.
I would still have to shift into fifth gear with the 4.40 FD

Wouldn't the 4.26 FD be a cheaper option? Maybe a longer trans than the SC4?

I'll bow to Tony on this one, however I do think SuperDave is right. I think the 4.15 ratio would help you hook up with a smaller tire but would take some strong torque to pull 9000 in the lights with that gear and a tall tire.

When we used a 22" tall tire, we had to shift into 5th gear. When switched to 24.5's no problem staying in 4th

I think the bearing sizes are different between the LS and the S4C/Y80/S80/Y21. There must be a way to modify the casing, If there is then that is probabaly what I will do.

Earl.....What trans?
I went from 22's to 24.5's and I still have to shift into fifth. **** I wonder if I have the S80 with the 4.785 FD

Sometimes it seems that the only way to know for sure is to count teeth. Gets confusing

If you need another tranny... let me know.. I got a 94-01 GSR tranny that has good gears, but bad casing..

Don't quote me on this, but I believe you can use the LS Trans, LSD and Ring Gear in a B16a Trans. B16A\LS are interchangable....and GSR\ITR are.

the 92+ LS countershaft will fit just transfer all gears and syncros over from the s4c/b16a gearset. The diff which carries the ring gear will bolt onto the stock s4c or b16a only differential... same goes for aftermarket, it will not fit the gsr/type R. The carrier bearings are all interchangeable and since you're using the same b16a differential and presumably casing, you don;t need to change the carrier bearings.

in terms of the question at hand, stick with the 4.4 final, even lowering final (I had a 3.7 KAAZ) I still went to 4th (about 5-10' before 1/4 mark). I was using 25" slicks too and still went to 4th (even revving to 10.5 KRPM.

So will the internals of a B16 tranny fit into a GSR casing?

Sorry i'm kinda late on this one. First of all, when you ran the numbers for mph did you calculate about an 1" of expansion into the tire? Second, I can't believe you are doing that kind of power and reving to 9k on stock valvetrain! Be careful! Anyways, If you are running out of gear with your setup the 4.26 final should help you out. As far as I know it will interchange, but i've never tried it. We run a big tire so i've never messed with anything lower than a 4.40. I guess best way is to take the two countershafts and take some measurements on them. You can get a countershaft pretty cheap from honda compared to what's available aftermarket. Then there's always the stock ls tranny option. That's what we ran when we ran 24.5's. I don't remember what traps we ran with those, it was a long time ago!

why not just try switching out the 4th gear for a slighty longer one? I def agree with tony on the valvetrain subject....

out of curiosity i wonder what my top mph will be in 4th gear. Gsr tranny with jdm itr 4.78 FD and 24.5 slicks. rev to 9000. hmmmm...im gonna guess around high 120's since that what R trannies can do and mine is very similar to that
