Default Best value/awesome handling bike?

In your opinion, which sports bike between 1996 and 2001 (for less than $8k) has great power, is responsive and has great handling?

Also: which is an overall a better bike, the '02 gsx-r600 or the CBR-600RR? Or are they too close to tell?

2000-2001 Suzuki GSXR 750.............best all around bike out.............All the 600 are about the same, but the new ninja 600R is going to be a very fun bike. And the CBR has not been tested yet!

R6 would probably be the overall greatest performer in your category(96-01)... but if you're asking you aren't prepared to ride any middleweight anywhere near its potential. gixxer has probably the strongest powertrain, cbr friendliest powerband, zx6r best ergos. None of the 4 major jap bikes lose out in any one category really..

600rr is an overhauled update very competitive w/ the new r6 and 6r. The gsxr600 has yet to undergo a major update. Btw, the 600rr is new for the 03 model line...

From the question I'm just gonna go out on a limb and assume you've never ridden before. You probably should start off with something cheap and used. Ride it for a year then go for a new bike.

yeah, you hit it on the nose. I'm applying for my motorcycle lisence soon and am trying to do some research. I really like the gsxr's and the cbr's, I wanted a bike that had some decent power, and good handling, not a bike that's only good in a straight line

ex500/500r

Edit: cheaper to buy, insure and repair and when you are able to ride the thing... it'll get you across the 1/4 in around or just under 13sec depending on how well you ride. 1-60mph in under 4... decent for a bike, lightning to a novice. Plus they're easy to sell when you're ready

If you are going to ride the bike daily(read: not race it) I would get a Kawasaki ZX636R more comfortable, more usable midrange, and you as a beginner, would not be able to tell a handling difference.

Of all the 600cc bikes to me the F4i was the easiest to ride fast on at first (i.e. the most confidence inspiring)

You sound like you're new to this. Realistically, ANY 600 you pick up will be more than you can handle for a year or two. Why don't you try looking at suzuki SV650/SV650s. or the EX500 (ninja 500) someone else mentioned. Pick one up used, spend a season getting comfortable with it (read: dropping the cheap used bike instead of your new one), then pick up one of the supersports.

I haven't ridden any of the '02s, but previous CBR/GSX-R experience suggests the Gix is slightly more sport than the CBR (read, also less comfortable).
