Buying a second car soon...any suggestions? must be CHEAP.
Here's the story. I'm going back to school next semester in downtown Richmond (VCU). I'd rather not take the R down there for obvious reasons. I'm looking for a decent beater in the $3000 range.
Right now i'm considering 88-91 CRX Si, 90ish Miata (RWD r0x0rz!, not to mention by far the nicest shifter i have ever felt in my life.), or saying fuuuugit and getting a 89ish Bronco.
What do you guys think?

I'd just get an old toyota pickup. Very reliable and nobody wants it. But since its not on your list, get the miata.
If you ever plan on tracking your ITR, might as well buy a tow vehicle now. Old Caprice, Suburban, F150/250, etc. etc.
If not, I bought a 1990 Miata. I just autocrossed it today and did the same times as a good friend who was in his ITR. So the Miata is much fun plus the option of turning it into a Spec Miata. Also, theft rate is practically zero.

Aren't you the guy that just traded away a perfectly good EG hatch?

Any Ex Police cruiser,,, for an older Caprice, that is the price you will be in. They run FOREVER, are built like tanks and are cheap and easy to fix, trust me I've crashed and fixed a few, AND have at least a 5,000 lb towing ability. Everything is heavy duty with stress on long life and extreme wear, the Cars have ***** and aren't half bad in snow either...
Plus the looks you get when you cruise slowly or fly quickly past people are totally priceless...
If you were further North then I'd suggest a truck or 4x4 but, an ex crusier would fit perfectly as a beater where you will be, awesome space for loading and hauling school stuff, great for taking a bunch of friends out, and way big enough to mess around with a girl in the front, no need to climb in the back!
Plus just a smooth dream to drive on the highways...
Get a Chevy though,,, for the early to mid 90's "your price range" they were a lot more powerful and reliable albeit not quite as plush as the Fords... But, the Fords of that era are more expensive for parts and especially difficult with electrical issues.
I loved Both of mine,,, but, now have a 92 Sentra,,, Just NOT the same...
Good luck,
A.

Maybe I'm not understanding something.

get a 240 hatch back like a 91 you could find one with shitty paint but a straight body for like 1500-2500 throw an s13 sr20det red top in it for like 1800 and you have a fast as **** bucket.
Don't buy a car you'll want to modify.
There is nothing worse than trying to do more than one project at the same time.
Trust me, I speak from experience.

Hit me up with an e-mail or IM. I might be willing to sell my 90 Civic Si.
Kinda need some extra money for property taxes and such..

DON'T get the 89 Bronco - as the owner of an 90 Ranger (same exact thing) I can say it's the biggest POS I have ever owned. They are built like garbage, run like garbage, and crap falls off or goes bad weekly. And this one has low miles and is in "good shape"! Geesh, if this is an average domestic I'll keep my Hondas.
Listen to these other guys - get a Toyota truck. When you've owned nothing but Hondas like I have, these 80's era domestics may as well be Yugos IMO.
The trannies aren't bad though - most are made by Mazda (you gotta check to make sure you don't get a Ford one). Everything else is poop. I've only owned this thing a year and I have so many stories I can't wait to be a grandpa so I can tell em to my grandkids.
