Default newbie question

How do change out spark plugs? Does it require you to remove the head cover? I don't have an owner's manual for my 96 ex, and when I removed the plug wires from the head cover the spark plugs are way down there. Sorry for the dumb question.

ok, i'll help.
Take the plug wires, but do one spark plug at a time, you need a large socket (don't know the size) and take the plugs out, and change it with a new, be carefull when putting the new plug back in, try to not tight it much, i think it should be from 16 - 20 Ft-lbs, but don't quote me on that. Another thing, if you kinda like to rev your engine and you are on a hot climate, you could use one step colder plugs, the code is on the hood sticker inside (here they are: NGK: ZFR6F-11 or ND: KJ20CR-L11) but it's not something you NEED. if you need any more info IM me.

Yes, get the spark plug sockets, they have a rubber insert inside that will hold the plug in the socket as you take them out or put them in. THey also help from cracking the plugs. They should be thightened to 13 lbs. And also, get a cheap extension and duct tape the socket to the extension. A small piece of duct tape will save you the frustration that comes from the socket getting stuck on the plug.

yeah dude, you gotta pull the head. lube the muffler bearings - check your flux capacitor make sure you aren't leaking time travel juice.... you also have to move your muffler filter out of the way... then you might fix it?

What is the difference between "taper seat" and "gasket type", and which specification should I use when tightening?

On the ngk zfr5f-11 plugs it says 18-21 lb/ft for gasket type, and 7-14 lb/ft for taper seat. Thanks for the help.

I'll second that. By the way welcome to H-T, Llama. We're not all jerks around here. But for the spark plug tech, someone else will answer, I don't know myself...Sorry

ok, i think, and don't quote me, i'm not sure, hell, i think i'm even inventing this, but the gasket type is the one that has the metal gasket, and the taper seat is the one that doesn't have it, this is really a bump, not the actual fact, hehe

To tell the difference look at the threads from the side. On the gasket type, the threaded section will be equal thickness the whole way, and it will have a crush washer, that when you tighten down, you can feel it crush. The tapered type if you are looking from the side will start out narrower on the electrode side and gradually increase in diameter. Be very careful when tightening those down.

by the way, try to change the plugs when the car is cold, it's easier plus less risk of getting burned
