Default Stock Tranny Power Handling? (LS, GS, GSR, or Civic..)

Whats the average amount of power that the stock honda trannies of basically any trims you guys can think of can handle? I'm trying to settle a small argument and feel that a stock tranny, especially that of a gsr, non-turbocharged, nor high-compression should die at less than 240 horsepower.

Whats your opinion? How does the integra or even civc trannies hold up?

thanks in advance (sorry for posting in type-r..could'nt decicde between tech and here)

why even argue in the first place? Sounds rather silly to me, since i assume neither of you have motors putting down 240whp. Besides its a matter of how you (ab)use your equipment, im sure that you can break a GSR tranny at stock GSR power levels.

ive broken syncros in my 1st type r tranny at like 6k miles
does that count ? that was only at like 170-180 hp or so at the wheels

this seems like a stupid post thoguh , but theres your answer, depends on how much you abuse it .

I would hope the clutch would fry before anything else...especially if you are dumping it.

Are you talking 240 whp or flywheel? Anyway, you are probably going to have high comp pistons to get that out of 1.8 liters.

Regardless, it does not matter. The only thing a tranny cares about is torque, and rpms. Some trannies are rated by torque and some by hp. Too much torque can snap gears or other things. Too much hp even within torque range will produce lots of heat which may weaken things causing breakage. I have never seen the ratings for any stock teg tranny.

Abuse will kill a tranny for you very quickly. 9.5k clutch dumps on slicks with 240 whp should be effective

GS/LS = same tranny. Many of the turbocharged drag cars of just a few years ago used these trannies modified only with a welded differential. Ed Bergenholtz used a setup like this with appx. 800 whp.

Theoretically the GS-R tranny should be slightly stouter due to it's larger ring gear and diff.

Bottom line: you're not going to hurt a stock tranny with 240 whp unless you don't know how to drive. And synchros are a wear item.
