Default difference btw h22 vtec and h23 non vtec?

i have a '96 prelude SI with the 2.3 liter and i was wondering if it was worth the money to make it vtec or if it was even possible. i know i would need to replace components in the timming sys and the computer, what else would be necesary?

would i need to get new cams as well?

You need to change the engine, ecu, and some wiring.

The entire head is a different design, you could put an H22 VTEC head on an H23 block, but you gotta really know what you're doing.

you can grab an H22A off of nippon-motors for like $1200, the whole engine and ecu for around $2000

i've already done this swap... it's quite easy.

obvious differences between the two blocks is rods, crank, pistons, and oil squirters.

you can swap the oil squirters between the blocks. the blocks are identical, and have all the holes tapped for VTEC operation already for parts interchangeability.

you'll need to swap the oil pump, water pump, and timing gear from a VTEC motor to your H23 block, as the teeth on the H22 VTEC cam gears are different. use an H22 timing belt.

next, you have to remove the plug for VTEC oiling from your block. just a small plug near the knock sensor. then use an H22 headgasket.

plop the new VTEC head on your motor, then rewire your sensors as necessary in the case of VTEC operation, and IAB sensor equipment, or just get an H22 engine harness.

plug in your new ECU, and have fun.

*note, you will lose some compression as the VTEC head has more chamber volume than the H23 head, and the H23 pistons aren't domed. around 9.3:1 compression or so, but you can clay check it to be absolutely sure on volume.
