Default Lost oil seal on way to work.

Oil light came on about 1/2 way to work this AM. Pulled into a conbvenience store and pulled the dipstick, nothing ! Looked under car and there was already a fair puddle. I put 3 Qts. in and was still down a 1/2 so I put a 4th in. By the time I got to work 10 miles away it was off the stick again.

It appears to be coming from behind the timing cover so I'm assuming a balancer shaft seal. I'm going to fill everything I can find with oil and nurse it home. Just put new timing belts on a few weeks ago and all the seals looked in excellent condition. The belts are probably oil soaked and ruined now. Kept the old ones, they look like brand new so I'm going to risk reusing them. Hey. if they let go I have a complete running F22A6 and 5 speed with 50,000 fewer miles. Just hope it happens when I have the time to do the swap. Happy frickin' Thanksgiving.

On the fifth gens there was a recall dealing with that balancer shaft seal. The dealership was supposed to put a retainer clip on. Supposedly the seal could blow out and rapidly expel the engine oil. I was hoping mine would blow and my engine seize so I could get a new engine free from Honda. I believe the deadline for the recall is Jan2003. Hippie isn't your car a 4th gen though?

Nothing, like I said I checked all the seals and they looked A-1 with no signs of any seepage or leaks and they were all seated. I have about 3-4K on it since the belts with no problem. This happened suddenly as there was no oil spotting where I parked on the driveway last night. The Honda dealer told me when I got the belts that these are known for popping the balancer shaft seal and I got one but since it looked good I didn't change it. Probably on me.

Yes you do. I believe the deadline is at the end of this year. Call your dealership...

Mine's a 4th and I got the "recall clip" and a balancer shaft seal when I bought new timing belts. My balancer shaft seal looked fine and for the life of me I couldn't find a way to make the clip work on mine so I skipped it. You know, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." ? If that IS the problem I'll be making one though. There is a strip of oil a foot wide all the way from the motor to the rear bumber under my car, the left rear wheel and tire, 1/4 panel and the whole back end of my car is soaked with oil. I have 2 gallons in the trunk and will top it off just before I pull out. My boss said get all the oil I need from our mechanic and leave before the shop traffic starts. Didn't have to tell me twice !!! Wish me luck, it's 28 miles home. It will either make it or blow trying.

I've heard that when that seal goes the oil leaks out like sieve. Be careful. I think you'll have to pull over every mile or so... Let us know how it goes.Good luck

Made it home but had to stop twice and put in 7 Qts.; that's after overfilling it before I left work. You should see my parking space at work !!! The Exxon Valdez ain't got nothin' on me. What a friggin' mess !!! NAPA store was able to get all the seals on today's warehouse shipment so I can pick those up at 7 AM Friday. Had to pull my '62 Impala out of storage so I'd have some way to get to NAPA Friday as my wife has to have her car. Hadn't driven it for awhile and gettin' in that after buzzin' around in the Honda was really different. Hope to tear the Honda down tomorrow before I go to the "outlaws" for turkey. Hope it's "just" a seal.

No you don't, it's an original MidWest car. The outer body is pretty good but it needs new floor pans and inner rockers. In other words a "body off" resto. Plus some dumba$$ tried to put '63 AC on it and butchered the firewall so I have to graft in a piece from a donor car to put the original heater setup back in it. Still looks good goin' down the road though and ya' can't kill the 283/PG. I've tried, I need an excuse to give my wife for puttin' a 406 small block and 4 speed in it. Or a 409 if I can find one CHEAP enough. If I decide to let her go I'll let ya' know but don't hold your breath . Did I mention it's a Super Sport ?

Ermine White roof over a Roman Red lower body with red bucket seat interior just like the trim codes on the Data tag say it's supposed to be. . Two tone paint was not real common on '62 Super Sports, not rare but not real common either. I'll post a pic one of these days, just signed up at Imagestation so I can post a pic now and then. It looks a lot better in the pics than it really is but people have started with a lot worse.

It was the balancer shaft seal, it pushed out but wasn't damaged so I drove it back in and finally figured out how the "recall clip" works and it is on.

It may be a while before I post pics, my PC got hit with the Win32.Klez and one other similar virus. I can't download the security Patches I need from MS and it has disabled my Norton Anti Virus. I downloaded a program from McAfee that appears to have wiped out the viruses but I think my registry is hosed. At least I have a backup of my main programs.

Fixin' the Honda was a lot dirtier but not nearly as frustrating.

u just got yourself a free timing belt and water pump tune up. certain 5th gen accords have a balancer shaft oil seal recall which causes what you just experienced. oil on timing belt kills the belt and means they have to replace it for you free of charge. hurry though the recall expires jan 1, 2003. i know of a few people in my area w/ 5g accords that clipped part of the balancer shaft seal and put a little oil on their timing belt and water pump and honda had to replace it all at their cost.

Unfortunately I have a 4th Gen and it has 194K on it, no freebies for me............ A friend who is an ASE certified mechanic told me since my new belts only had oil on them a couple days to hose them down with Brake Cleaner and they would still outlast the car. One good thing came out of this mess, my adjuster for my alt/AC belt wasn't working correctly. When I did the timing belts I put it back just the way it came off. This time I took it apart, cleaned it and put it back together the way I thought it should go. Guess what, now it works.
