timing problem
alright...my 1st gen b16 dist bearing went out...so i replaced it with my d16 dist...it runs good...but SEEMS slower...i duno it could just be that im paranoid....also at idle...it seems to miss somtimes...but when i give it throttle its smooth..its never went dead on me..and it never misses at any rpm over like 1500...so i go to check my timing today...and i loosen the dist...its no where near the timing mark on the timing belt cover...its a few inches away! its severely retarted...i advanced it as much as possible and its still like 1-1/2 or 2 inchs away from the mark....what do you guys think? would hte car even run if the timing was that far off?? it makes sense that the car seems slower because the timing is so retarted...
same thing happend to me. i checked it and it was about 7 degrees retarted even after turning the dist. all the way. after messing with every possibility for about 3 weeks i got a pair of jg adjustible cam gears. now im in perfect time. there is no missing and runs a hell of a lot stronger...yea if u are retarted that much . u are not neer full potential of your car....hope it helped
that dosnt sound like the best way to fix it...maybe im wrong..i duno..it just seems like playing with the cam timing to fix the ignition timing is kinda rigging it up to work..and not solving the real problem....the distributor...
does anyone know if i would get this same problem if i used an integra distributor?? also..does anyone know of a place in atl to get a distributor rebuilt...im thinking of just getting my damn b16 dist rebuilt

Are you putting a jumper in the programming mode connector, the check engine light should come on then you should set the base timing for the ecm?
in a 1989 civic the connector is a 2 pin connector behind the washer resevoir on the drivers side.
in a 1998 civic the connector is 2 pin with a green rubber cover above the ecm in the passengers kick panel

I'm experiencing the same problem
I shorted the blue 2 pin connector by the heater blower motor in the passenger footwell area and set idle to 750 and then 780 per the manual procedure and still cannot get the timing to set - but when i drive it it pings still. I have a 91 CRX with a VC SOHC replacement motor.
