Default Vacuum Leak Testing

Hey people... I have a h23 engine and want to know how do you guys check for vacuum leaks. Also, how many hoses are there to check and where are they located. Thanks for your inputs.

It depends. Why do you think you have a vacuum leak?

You start by pinching off vacuum lines.

They run all over your engine bay. Almost everything that comes off your intake has vacuum on it. You can use carb cleaner spray or water in a squirt bottle (which is safer) when spraying carb cleaner the idle will surge when you find a leak or stumble when you use water. Dont forget to check the vacuum resivour.

My 2 favorite meathods of finding vaccume leaks are a smoke machine and propane search.

The smoke machine pumps out a Vapor (lemon scented) I usually plug the line into the brake booster vaccume line and let it pump away.....any leak will start pouring out this vapor (smoke) and is pretty easy to find with a good light

The Propane search need the engine running.....and by using a propane bottle with a little wand on it (using a very low flow of propane) startmoving the end of the wand by any connectors you can see....if the idle increases....you have found a leak (it leans out your A/F Mixture)

Both meathods work well...and if you can't find it with one....the other usually works.

can you tell me where can i find the smoke machine or the propane? Also, if I pump it from the brake booster vacuum hose, it will check the whole car for any vacuum leaks?
