First off, I've got a '93 CX with a B16A3.

The problem just started yesterday. Didn't seem gradual, just all of the sudden. When driving the car it's very difficult to shift gears, almost like the clutch isn't fully disengaging. But I don't think the clutch is the problem, it appears to be working exactly as it should. What else could be wrong?

Same type of thing happend to me. My pressure plate clips broke. The clutch doesn't feel different, but shifting is almost like you shifting without the clutch. I would have the pressure plate checked out. It happend to me twice.

 

This is just an odea for you, and I am by no means saying that this will solve your problems, but when was the last time you had the tranny oil changed? I know on my wife's CRX when I changed the oil in it made the tranny feel like new again, although the hard shifting coming all at once doesn't sound like this is the problem. I'd have to say anything that comes on so suddenly makes me think of some sort of mechanical failure. Like broken fingers on the pressure plate, or something of that nature...

Check the clutch master cylinder before you do anything else. Not saying for sure that's what it is, but my car acted like this when my hydraulic clutch fluid was low. And it happened out of the blue all of the sudden, it wasn't gradual. However, when it happened to me, my clutch when almost to the floor before disengaging.

 

how many miles are on the trans .... it could be the synchros

 

 

If the clutch wasn't disengaging, you wouldn't be able to put it into gear, from a dead stop, without a lot grinding. Is this a problem too?

Sitting still with the car off it shifts like a dream. Car running sitting still, no grinds. Driving down the road, pretty easy to get out of gear, hard to get into gear. I pretty much just have to "rev-match" or whatever you wanna call it.

 

Well, I would say you don't have any oil in your tranny, or it's extremely low. When is the last time you changed/checked it ???

 

if your tranny was losing oil I think you would be able to tell by spots in your driveway.

my boy and i replaced his clutch and flywheel while his block was sitting outside before the swap, it was annoying when it was outside, so if the block is inside the chasis, i'm sure it would suck, i don't think it was HARD, but it was annoying good luck

 

My guess would definitely be the springs on the pressure plate snapped off. I had the same thing happen to me. I would get it fixed ASAP...... I drove on it for a little and I scored and burnt up the flywheel so bad that it needed to be completely replaced.

 

It's a bish. Checking the oil is easier. Have you done that yet?!?!?!?!?

 

I'll say that I'm 90% sure that a spring or springs in the clutch DISC have popped out.

What happens is a spring will pop out and get tossed around in there and when it binds up between the disc and P.P or flywheel then that's when you cannot shift. Once it becomes dislodged then it will shift like normal again, thus giving you the unpredictability factor.

I've seen a number of stockie and Clutch Masters clutches do this - sometimes the disc will have shitloads of wear left but once the springs pop out it's useless.

I'd say you probably need a clutch.

Check the tranny fluid, but usually if you're low it will shift okay but 5th will be messed up because it's the last gear to get oil. It would even pop out if you're low on fluid.

 

i think.. it could be oil.. but if you checked it.. then its ko0.. that happened to me too.. from downshifting.. and racing a stock clutch some guy told me that (autozone i dont think he knows what he is talking about).. if htere is no oil in the tranny you have a leak.. if you taken motor out.. and right back in.. check axles if there all the way in peace

Shifting is in no way undpredictable. It's just hars to shift. Like shifting without the clutch. Also, when starting from a stop the clutch chatters a whole lot, which it NEVER did before.

OT: my Carsound cat has now self-destructed after only a month!

 

i was road testing a older integra the other day (i am a acura tech) and this exact thing happened to me. with the clutch all the way depressed, and the car would still move. Replace the clutch and boom, a nice missing clutch spring....everything is cool know, after there hefty bill

 

mines straight out hard to shift, whether the car is moving, on, off, watever, it's jus HARD!
