today i was inspecting the bare block and found that the oil squirters were looking unusual. so i took off one and saw that it was capped off so that no oil would squirt to the bottom of the piston. checked the others and all were capped off. anyone here has done that to their turbo engine? what are the advantages and disadvantages of doing this?

 

Forged pistons dont need the oil squirters, so some engine builders will pinch them shut. I dont see any advantages to doing this, yet it happens.

 

I dont think there is any reason to remove/close the squirters in a turbo motor,
but its been argued that in very high rpm applications, the extra oil adds to the weight of the piston. In my own motor, i would rather keep the squirters for the extra cooling the oil provides if nothing else. I would think that the gains if any, would not justify removing them, but it would be interesting to see dyno charts before and after.

Oil squirters are there to keep piston temperatures stable.
Compared to Forged pistons, Casted pistons get more soaked with heat?
Oil temps are really high (higher than water temps of course).
So, if you run Forged pistons, the squirters are just heating up the Forged pistons more?

 

No I think what the thing is, is that forged pistons dissipate (sp) the heat better, so oil doesnt have to be squirted on them to carry away the heat. I dunno for sure, correct me if I'm wrong.

 

Honda put them in to cool the piston so the motor can run at a super lean ratio for better emissions on a stock motor. I don't know if it is a good idea to pinch them off if you still use the stock ecu since it still runs lean out of boost. With an aftermarket ecu it runs a richer ratio so you won't need them and the extra oil just adds weight to the piston for no reason.

 

so.. in a B20B block, where as far as I know, oil squirters are not available, they would be irrelevant if the engine was running turbocharged with aftermarket pistons/rods? i'm confused..

the oil squirters was the main reason why I wanted to move back to my B18C block with JE/Eagle bits'n'pieces..

so now I should just stay with my B20B block? *confused*

 

the only reason to want to move back to a B18C block is the factory gurdle (sp?) that it was..its worlds better then the Z10 (unless you do it right) the oil squirters are something of a perk.

 

SR20DET (Nissan 2 litre Turbo) motor also has piston coolers.

 

By plugging the squirters you will have more oil pressure for the rest of the block. Also there is less oil flying around in the pan and less reciprocating weight on the piston. Do this only with forged pistons, of course.
BTW, I never heard of anyone sealing the tip of the squirter but it might be cheaper than tapping the block and installing plugs.
