Default coolant temp sensor

okay, so i finally got my 86 going but when it heats up it has an irratic idle. I thought at first it was the IAC- no, then a vacuum leak- no, then timing maybe- close but no cigar. So now im thinking it could be the coolant temp sensor but im not reading any codes. Is this possible? and where is the sensor on the head; is it the one prong plug or the larger 2 prong plug?

The two pronged goes to the ECU. The single prong goes to the gauge.
