Hey guys, I am buying an H23 motor that has a spun rod bearing ( I am getting it for dirt cheap) and I was wondering if this can be fixed at minimal cost? How much to fix?? Can I do it myself??

You have to replace the rod and likely the piston....

 

Oh, ok. Do you think anything could be wrong with the block??
The guy said that it still runs.

 

The more he continues to run the motor with a spun bearing, the more likely it is that the crank or block is damaged too...

The fact that it runs is good in a sense...the rod hasn't fused itself to the crank...at this point the crank should be okay....

Ask him about oil consumption...that will give you an idea of the condition of the pistons/rings...

 

Cool. He only ran the car for a few minutes. He got a JDM H22 swap. I am getting the whole H23 swap for pretty cheap so I just want to take the engine apart. I would like to fix it if I can...but if I can't ...no big deal.

Do a compression and leakdown test before you buy

 

If you're getting something with a spun bearing.... well--you could try to just get an oversized OEM bearing for it; but I'd really recommend taking it to a shop, have it line bored, and have the crank journals checked out. It'd be worth the time/money. Those problems can get nasty... especially when you're dealing with oil pressure problems (bearing clearances relate directly to oil pressure).
