Default The infamous trans mounted speed sensors.

Picked up a 95 accord. I cant tell what trim level it is.

4cy, auto,. The notorious flashing D4. Speedo going haywire or not working at all. Rough shifting. Fluid clean and full.

This old Gramma car was pretty cheap. Smells like 30 years of chain smoking tho. Working on that.

So, which trans speed sensor is likely my culprit? The realitvely easy to get at one on top of the "non rotor" type down on the back of the trans which requires lifting the car to get to? Or just swap out both and hope for the best?

To know which trim level it is:

DX has manual roll up windows.
EX has a retractable sun rooof
LX is everything else.

I would check the engines codes on your ride first before just guessing at what to do........That's just me.
This video can help with the procedure. Good Luck!

VSS doesnt affect upnshifts, but it will affect downshifts.
If the speedo is erratic it could be the VSS is dirty and needs cleaning.
https://web.archive.org/web/20231003...d.com/vss.html

AT codes will blink from the D4 lamp.
They are not the same as the CEL codes.
D4 has its own set of codes.
If upshifting is rough its probably the NM/NC pickups on the right side cover.
Remove 10mm headed bolts, gently twist sensors to break free and pull out.
Wipe end of sensor clean of any gunk/ferrous material. Lube up orings and reinstall.
Verify TV cable from trans to throttle body has no slack and is not pretensioned. Two open end 12mm wrenches make it easy.
Take slack out of throttle to pedal cable while there.

Engine running condition greatly affects how transmission functions.

If there are any engine codes, fix those first before blaming the transmission.

This is a 30yo car and apparently has been sitting for a bit. Not to appear ungrateful for the indispensable assistance so far but I do not know what the components are that you mentioned. Right side I assume is when looking into the engine bay standing in front of the vehicle.

Thank You so much for this help.

The Speedo was erratic, now it's just dead. I'll take a pic of the lights later.

No engine codes. CEL just comes on and stays on.

D4 code is 14. I let it cycle a few times to ensure there wasn't any additional codes.

Swapped out the VSS anyway. The one I replaced was original.

Pulled those sensor away in the front without unplugging it. Cleaned them real well even tho they were already clean. Let them dry before reinstall.

I checked the cable. Seems good and adjusted properly. It is NOT secured by the tab on the bracket and I was not able to see where it clipped to. (See pic)

Likewise the radiator hose is "floppy", there is a bracket with what looks like a stud hole to mount it, but I am unsure where it gets mounted to or in what orientation. I really don't like the floppy hose.

The upper hose is rubbing on the AC line (currently AC is inoperable...next project after this) unsure if it just needs oriented a bit differently or I should put some wire/hose corrugated loom on there to keep it from rubbing.

Upper hose rubs on AC lines. ☹️

Floppy coolant hose. Bracket attachment or orientation unclear ☹️

Looks clean. Cleaned it anyway. Reinstalled. Those O rings sure look fragile.

Bracket to secure cable. Has a tab. Can find no corresponding slot to secure it.

Bracket looks made to secure coolant hose, but no real attaching point in the vicinity. Relay wire to starter is secured pretty tight to this bracket. Not much slack in that wire.

Test drive
Speedo working again.(Yay!)
D4 still flashing. Shifting seems smooth and positive now..except for the flashing light one would not know there's an issue.

Sitting in the car, your left is the left of the car and vice versa.
Facing the engine bay it would be opposite.

That is the cover and the sensors.

What you pulled off was the shift solenoid pair, those are on the front of the transmission.

Also CEL went off and has not come back on since I changed the VSS.

TCM coming from an online seller who guarantees that it's good or free returns. Try to get that D4 handled then deal with the ignition switch.
