Has the 2020 Civic’s ‘Christmas tree’ warning lights come on again? Here’s a money-sa
Guys, who among you Honda drivers hasn’t seen that whole suite of ‘Emissions System Problem’ warnings suddenly pop up on the dashboard? Last week, it happened again on my Civic. This ‘Christmas tree’ of lights usually means one of two things: either a sensor has momentarily gone haywire (false alarm), or something has genuinely gone wrong.
To avoid wasting money at the dealer and queuing for a diagnostic scan, I ran a Quick Scan using a cheap Bluetooth OBD2 adapter paired with OBDocker, which also tested the system’s logic:
1. Test results: It picked up an intermittent communication fault code (U0401). I tried the app’s “Quick Clear” function, and the light went out immediately after tapping it.
2. My takeaway: The logic is quite robust – if it’s a ‘false fault’ or ‘false alarm’ like mine, clearing it sorts the issue; it hasn’t recurred after a week’s driving. However, if your hardware (such as an oxygen sensor) is genuinely faulty, the self-test will still report an error after clearing, and the light will come back on immediately.
3. Tips to avoid pitfalls: The best thing about this feature is that it helps you avoid being taken for a ride by garages. If you can’t clear the fault, just look up the specific code shown in the app to find out what it means, rather than listening to the mechanic’s nonsense.
When you get an ‘emissions light’ warning, what’s the most common cause you’ve found? Is it a loose fuel cap, or a sensor wire chewed by a mouse?
