Hey there... first time poster.
About to buy a 85 Accord. Base model, carb, 170k. Have good records, but nothing for timing belt. So gonna replace it (and water pump) just in case. Anyone got a link to a video on how its done, or a PDF of the factory service manual? I have the Haynes book, but gathering as much info as I can before digging in to the actual work. Thanks!
Here are 2 jpg images I have....... You will need to copy them and then use a photo viewer to enlarge them.
You should also replace the cam and crankshaft seals also. Lastly, replace the tensioner bearing assembly also. I hope this helps.
Thanks so much. Will also do the additional While I am There work suggested. Any hints or pro tips on doing the work? Never dealt with timing before, except once on my son's Lexus. My car is a rotary.. so no timing!
How on earth do you tension the alternator belt? Looks like the common method of the alternator pivoting on a fixed bolt, with a slotted bolt above to allow the alternator to swing away fro
the main pulley…. But for the life of me I can’t work out how to get a pry bar in there to hold the tension whilst I tighten the slotted bolt.
Alternator is tucked low behind the engine. Do O need to be underneath the car with a pry bar whilst a second person tightens the slotted nut?

Use a large screwdriver or any long tool that you can slide between the alternator and whatever without breaking anything, yes it is a pita with the booster and the emission control gizmos... forgot the exact process, harbor freight sells these pry bar box of various length, you could slide it from underneath and ask a friend... or there is a small window between the alternator and the belt pulley, not too much tension is needed a small deflection of the belt is OK, no gorilla strenght really needed

Got it! Purchased an OReillly long thin pry bar, and tensioned from above. A very helpful person on a Facebook Accord forum marked up a photograph of exactly where it goes... just behind the L angled plate where the slotted bolt sits. Was hidden behind a bunch of vacuum lines. All good now.
