1993 Accord Speedometer and now Tach issue
I have a new to me 1993 Accord coupe. From the first, the speedometer displayed almost exactly 1/2 actual speed first thing in the morning but in the afternoon after being parked in the sun, the speedo was spot on. Now it is a constant issue. Along with that, the tach was perfect at first. Now it shows nothing until I rev it and then it shoots up to about 2k then climbs rapidly to about 5500 even when I know I am nowhere near that RPM based on speed and gear. Is there a common issue or does anyone have the test procedure for the sending sensors for both of these? Just looking for a direction to test before I start trying to find ever ground and pull the guage cluster to check the solder, etc.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
The speedometer is not a cable from at least 1990 and newer.
There is a speed sensor on the transmission with two wires (top). If this sensor is loose, the car runs poorly.
I have the same speedo issue with two of my current Accords (91 and 93).
I replaced the transmission sensor with a new Ebay sensor. That didn't fix the issue. I then replaced it with a known working sensor and that didn't fix it.
I then replaced the speedometer only, not the whole dash and that didn't fix my issue. I just drive by Tach when in 5th or overdrive and keep up with traffic when in town. But the speedo normally works at -45mph or when warmed up enough. I do have more trouble in the winter.
5th gear 65mph with a working Tach is 2,500 RPM. 55 is 2300 RPM and 45mph is1,950 RPM
As the Tach is electric as A96ccord has stated It could be the circuity in the dash cluster. It could be a bad ground or loose wire in the fuse box under the hood. The Tach somehow gets it's impulse from the coil (in the distributor). 1989 and older the coil is external.
*This sounds stupid but... With my 89 Accords, if the clock is unplugged, the car won't run. If you do have a clock issue, though it doesn't sound likely, it may cause an issue with the Tach????
