Civic 2002 issue

A relative of mine bought the car about a month ago only to already have problems with it. It won't go past first gear and stuck at 30 won't go any faster now. Had this message show up after doing a obi2 test and it says the transmission would need further inspection rather than just being a pinpoint issue.2002 Honda Civic ex vtec....I'm wondering if it's the solenoid shift sensor going out since it shifts just fine at startup but after it runs for a while the shifting doesn't work at all, replaced all spark plugs already and waiting on coils to arrive, what is going on???.
