Default ATF Cooling pipe, hoses? Radiator

Hello
the Honda Odyssey has ATF cooling integrated into the radiator.
There is this pipe assembly at the bottom of the radiator seeming only to transfer fluid from one location to another. Both ends being connected via rubber hoses, on one end to the radiator, and on the other end to yet another pipe that leads to the transmission. Can anyone thing of any other purpose of this? Why not just replace with rubber hose?

Avoiding mechanical wear/abrasion/abuse.
ATF cooling (metal transfers heat better than rubber).
