What gasket/seal is hanging down in this picture ?
Hello, I saw the seal/gasket hanging out and thought it was to the oil pan gasket. However, when I removed the oil pan gasket it looks like it goes around the crankshaft. I'm hoping someone here can tell me just what the seal/gasket is hanging down in this picture. Thanks.

I went ahead and pulled it out the best I could, It didn't all come out thought, I could feel something break off. To me it looks like part of a gasket that'd go to the valve cover, but I don't see how that could be unless someone dropped one down in there before I bought it used. Here's a picture of what I pulled out.I figured what ever it is needs to be fixed so I figured I might as well try to see what it is.

The timing cover gaskets/seals is one thing I didn't look at when trying to figure out what it was. It looks like it is the timing cover seal right down to the bigger and smaller tabs comparing it to the AISIN SKH002 they sell at Rock Auto.Thank you for the help.
The oil pan gasket still needed replacing. It's hard and brittle. It's also stuck to the oil pan like it's melted onto to it. I just ordered another oil pan.
If I'm not mistaken, while I have everything torn apart to replace the timing cover seal/gasket stuff I might as well change the timing belt and perhaps the tension pulley at the very least?

Sounds like a good idea if those items have not been replaced in 70-90K miles. If you haven't had the car long enough to know the mileage interval... better safe than sorry.

Ya, as much as I'd like NOT to spend the money I ordered the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, valve cover gasket set, timing cover seal set, and even a crankshaft seal just in case. I've had the car probably 7 years or so and short of the valve cover gasket being replaced nothing else in the list had been. Who knows how many miles are on the parts. I guess it's just needing some TLC maintenance. I have to keep this car running for a while longer, can't afford a new or used (new to me) vehicle at the moment. Thanks for the help. I never thought about the timing cover seal and would probably still be wondering - lol.

I've got the new parts on: water pump, belt tensioner, belt, cam seal, crankshaft seal. I even got a new timing cover set because the one on it was in pretty ruff shape. I got the crank shaft mark lined up with the arrow spot on and my cam was still in the correct spot and then released the belt tensioner pin. Got the the camshaft and crankshaft sensors back on. Gotta go pick up the daughters kid, so that's all for today most likely.
Let me know if this all looks good, etc. I'm pretty sure I did it correctly, but it the first time I've done it on a Honda Civic.

Well, I thought I was going to finish up today, but I'm going to have to run over to Oreilly's. When I went to hook the cam sensor back up the connector wouldn't click into place, no matter how I tried. The crankshaft sensor clicked in good and tight, so I decided to see if the camshaft sensor would snap into it, to confirm whether it was the connector or the nub on the sensor itself. The crankshaft sensor connector snapped on tightly to the camshaft sensor so I figure it's the camshaft sensor connector giving out. Went to snap the crankshaft sensor connector back onto the crankshaft sensor and now it won't click into place either. The only thing I came think of is both connectors are just old and were on their last legs.
Any chance someone has any fixes? To me it seems that the part you press down on is just weak and doesn't come down far enough, hard enough, to snap on good.
So, I decided to put the new thermostat and upper hose on, figured I'd get something done, and the hose clamp gave out going back on. It's definitely an older clamp. That's where I said quits for today.
I'll pick up a couple sensor connectors and a couple new hose clamps and try again.
