Default Replacing slave cylinder but fork won't move

Just reattached my D17 transmission and now reattaching the slave cylinder; however, the transmission fork is to the far right against the housing, not enough space to secure the boot and too far right to line up the slave cylinder bolt holes. I can move the fork up and down, but it does not feel like it wants to be forced to the left and I don't feel like breaking the transmission. Should I try forcing it? Do I have to be in a certain gear first?
