Default 92 civic speedo issue!!

i have a 92 civic dx auto with just over 87k and the speedo started bouncing back n forth the other night while cruising at 55-60mph and would go in and out of overdrive. now it mostly stays at 0mph and works randomly… well not really works but will bounce around and stay at like 80mph and then stop working again… any one else have this happen? is the cluster jus bad? is this fixable??

I'd take a look at your VSS on your transmission and make sure that it isn't loose or the gears are stripped. Make sure you're grounds are also clean (Transmission and thermostat grounds).

If both of those are good, then next step is pulling your cluster out and looking for any visible signs of solder cracking and possibly reheating the solder to "reseat" it and fill any microcracks that might have formed.

Typically it's the board on the back of the speedo. I've swapped it a time or two and it fixes it. That was when u-pull it's were abundant in my area. Now getting just the board is tricky for me. Have to buy the cluster just to remove the small circuit board on the back of the speedometer. You can rob the board from any 92-95 civic speedo. I'm not sure if the circuit board changed for the 6th gen (96-00). Or if it was different on the speedo of the 4th gen (88-91).
