Default D16Y8 p28 Timing

my d15B7 blew a gasket, i bought a d16y8 and i'm going to run it with a p28 ecu, and a d15B7 distributor, my tuner says that instead of doing a y8 basemap i can get away with advancing the Distributor 4 degrees since the ecu runs at 16 deg btdc and the motor is setup for 12 deg btdc, would that be fine? do i need to mess with mechanical timing or leave that alone?

Yea. I think d16 runs at 16 degree and the economy d15 are happy at 12degree. Been a while since I messed with D-series.

You do the timing the same, get the cams to line up and crank to line and you're good.

Grab a timing gun and set the timing by moving your distributor around to get 16 degree. I think you need to bridge a plug in the car to do the timing unless you have hondata s300.

ok cool, so im assuming im unable to have the engine builder do the electric timing when it's being rebuilt out of the car and will have to wait until its inside the car? since i'm sticking a obd2 engine in an obd1 car im going to be reusuing the d15 distributor, do you think i will need to elongate the bolt holes in the dizzy to achieve 16 deg?

Any timing gun will work. Heck I have been using the harbor freight dial timing for years.

Yea, you need the engine in the car to set up the timing. If you have the oem honda distributor, you should be able to get 16 degree by clocking it. If you have after market distributor, you might have to make the hole longer.
