00 civic EX advice after mechanic installed LKQ engine, lotta mistakes
I bought back my 2000 Honda Civic EX with D16Y8 VTEC engine. Previous owner says it blew a head gasket or something, past repair paperwork says ran with no oil. Got it diagnosed by a mechanic I have been trying out lately. They say needs new engine. Took a while but found low mileage LKQ engine off LKQ eBay. Mechanic that put in engine said he was a Honda guy and he did these engines swaps so often that he could do it with his eyes closed. Engine gets put in. I also added getting new belts, new water pump and timing belt. I am 38 (f) and am auto body. I don't know much about changing out an engine and what all it entails. During engine install they say needs transmission mount, IACV and bank 1 sensor 1 o2 sensor. They also said the power steering belt I got won't fit and is wrong. That they can order the right belt for "relatively cheap" it cost $50 which I don't see as cheap. I thought they had quoted $15 over phone. Anyway, so i let them install IACV and I did the O2 sensor myself. Get car back. Checking out some stuff around the engine and noticed that the air cleaner is not bolted down by the bolt on strut tower. Okay. No big deal. So I try to tighten it down. I can't. I realize I can't because it's not properly seated in the holders underneath. Seems like an amateur mistake. I noticed the power steering belt is still old. I check oil, it's overfilled. I then check transmission fluid and it was all the way up stick WTF! So I stop and go back and look at correct procedure for checking fluid level. I was doing it wrong. Do it the correct way per the FSM and the owners manual and it's got absolutely no fluid on the stick. I had bought 4 qts of OEM Honda transmission fluid for them to put in. They gave me 3.5 quarts back I believe. So I go there and tell them some of these issues. They admit they forgot the power steering belt and the mechanic said he never saw the new one. So they ordered another one. I mention the transmission fluid and at first the mechanic said he put a few quarts in. The owner hints I might be checking wrong and says how they check the fluid. Mechanic stops him and says not that way, not for this civic. So I bring it back with the rest of the fluid. It must have correctly been low because I got less quarts back and they said its fixed now. So I replaced both the O2 sensors. Check engine light said it was the code for low circuit for bank 1 sensor 1. No more CELs since. The car had a hard time starting up for a while since we got it back and extremely rough/surging idle. The transmission seems to shift harshly. It hasn't been driven too much since the fluid was non existent on stick. Now we are driving it more. I have been trying to research rough idle. I found out my BlueDriver OBDII scanner can read live data for Advance Timing on Cylinder #1. From what I have seen up here for my engine it should be around 16 degrees BTDC at idle. It's at 25 - 30 degrees. Again, WTF. Also when they were doing the work, I got a full engine gasket set. There is a lot of oil leaking seemingly from the oil pan and possibly rear main seal. Other things I found so far, alternator nut rounded off. Washer fluid reservoir wasn't bolted back in to fender well and was causing a horrible vibration. Fixed that vibration but car still vibrates bad. At this point I am wondering if they even replaced the timing belt/water pump. I have written them an email today about the rough idle and oil leaks. Tried calling. No replies when they usually reply back pretty fast.
At this point should I be asking for some money back or something. They have done several things that had I not checked behind them, could have done serious damage to the engine and transmission. I don't know if the damage is already done. What are my options here? I have been very cordial with them all this time but this is getting ridiculous when they told me they were going to taken their time and for someone who says they do this kind of job all the time.
