I finally solved the startup rattle that occurs when the car sits for several hours. There is a Honda Service bulletin that states this is caused by timing chain tensioner. I replaced the tensioner with a Honda OEM part and it made no difference. I then researched how Honda VTEC operates on this engine. I then purchased a VTEC solenoid. Again, the startup rattle continued. I also had a minor problem where while driving at times, the engine would seem to alter its power range as I drove; this is the best I can describe it. I again researched the VTEC system and decided to replace the VTEC spool assembly. Upon starting the car this morning, the startup rattle is gone! I did purchase the actuator spring that I did not use. I also just purchased the Honda actuator gear and will keep that for down the road when I get to a point that I need to put in a timing chain kit. Tomorrow will adjust the valves and probably will put in the spring........


update: the startup rattle came back. Purchased VTEC actuator spring and installed it. Been a week or so and rattle is no more…..

 

I'm familiar with the older spool assemblies. This new cam phaser stuff is a bit tricky. I just got a 13 accord sport with a manual. Unfortunately it has the common issues, like startup rattle. Where is this spring that you installed? I'm guessing it's a backflow preventer to maintain oil in the phaser. Was it in the vtec solenoid?

 

I purchased the spring and and installed it. It did not help. I am actually getting ready to replace the VTC Actuator. I am waiting for a few gaskets to arrive to begin. my model 2014 accord, I need to remove intake, high pressure fuel pump, fuel pump base before I can get to the cam. Kinda a pain but not too big of a deal. I have the the new actuator on hand. I previously replaced tensioner and VTC oil control valve as well as the Valve Assembly Spool. It is apparent at this point, the actuator is the problem.......
