Default 2006 Odyssey VTEC issue

I don't know anything about vehicles really but hopefully I can explain. I purchased the van off of FB. The VTEC needed to be fixed. I had the part replaced with a brand new VTEC but apparently the code still shows there is something wrong with it. That is the only code that comes up. The van will go in "limp mode" I think the mechanic said still after 35 mph or so. The mechanic said I should take it to a dealer but that's 164 dollars just to hook it up to the code reader. If anyone has any idea of what might be the issue, I could suggest it to a less expensive mechanic hopefully. Thanks!

Sounds like $164 would be well spent at the dealership.

You should have had a pre-purchase inspection done on the vehicle.
What is the code? Most auto parts stores will read the OBDII codes for free.
Using an independent repair shop can sometimes be a better value. Selecting one is best done through recommendations from trusted folks (friends and family). Some shops do specialize in certain brands which allows them to bring their brand diagnostic and repair experience to your vehicle. Always be sure to understand what their written warranty means.

A decent OBD2 code scanner can be had for $25 these days. Most people could figure one out without the instructions- in other words they aren't hard to use for pulling codes.

I'll make a guess that since the shop threw a solenoid at it and then told you to have the dealer scan it you have a P1259 which is a "manufacturer specific" code.

If that's right, check the code link for more info.

And if that's all they did, hopefully they didn't charge you too much because they didn't try very hard.
