Default Gen 1 CRV 2001 Transmission problem

I was running my AWD without the rear driveshaft in preparation of swapping the rear transfer case.
A few weeks later the trans went into "full neutral" mode. Nothing worked, not even the parking pawl or reverse.
I took it upon myself to rebuild the trans. Everything went well except I found no obvious issues.
Clutches were still good. Some stickiness in the valve body, that's all. Put it back in but problem remained.
I reinstalled the rear driveshaft and now the car moves. Most of the time. Still no parking pawl engagement.
The only thing in the rebuild I didn't do was disassemble or fully inspect the internal front differential.
The current symptom is that whenever I give it moderate torque, it drops into this "neutral" mode.
But after a minute parked with the engine off, the car will move again. I can even get it up 60MPH if I'm gentle. Shifts nice.
All the sensors and solenoids all check out. Tachometer gives expected engine rpms. Speedometer as well.
So, can anyone support this diagnosis of a bad front differential? Thanks.

Sounds more like a bad front CV joint or a CV that has popped out of the transmission.

I'll check that the front axles are or are not seated properly but if they are not, I would expect some very loud noises when the car doesn't move. It seems the axles are not getting any power. The passenger side is new FWIW. Thanks for the suggestion.
