GM and Summit In Drag Racing - Is It Just Me?
I just watched the Pomona Race (NHRA) which got me to thinking: first of all, why does Summit back up a GM race team?
Secondly, it seems a bit unfair for GM to put its full efforts behind mod and pro teams that not only have the unending dollars of GM, but that also apparently use NOT ANY ECOTEC parts - not block, crank, head, or seemingly anything else.
I understand that there are no rules on how much money is spent on a racecar effort, but a bit much for even sponsored Honda teams to take these on. I mean, God bless J. Ligenfelter and here's to him recovering from his injury, but it looks to me as though they are using essentially GM NHRA Pro Stock chassis and dropping in a from scratch turbo 4.
Also, how realistic is it for Summit to back Cavaliers and/or Sunfires when the average Joe can not even build a GM car to run with their catalog parts?Well, I might be wrong and they can do whatever they want with their money, but just think about some of the above...

Makes it more fun to bust off a factory car. You can't out spend them so you have to out think them.
You notice that no one but a factory backed car runs the cavalier/sunbird. Shows what big $$ can do but they will never be a Honda.

yeah, it sucks that a big car manufacturer is backing up a team with high-tech engine parts that aren't even available to the public, but what suprises me is that you can take a honda motor and be very competitive with them, minus the big name sponsor
true, that. still you think that Summit would back a honda/acura or at least a nissan or mazda since these are the folks that buy their stuff.

true, but i was thinking the compact car version where you are lucky to get an air cleaner for cavalier/sunfire/focus/saturn...
hey maybe if gm sends me some $$ i will put a gm label on the current project and call it a saturn

yeah well if u look at any "buildups" of motors in summits catalogs, u will notice the parts they use. i forget exactly what i wrote to them. they basically used a turbo intake manifold, shitty pulleys and other **** on their NA motor. needless to say they didnt reply. i bet that motor was slow.
