Can I swap a non vtec D16Y7 from a 1998 EK hatch into a 2000 EM1 ?
I bought a crashed ek hatch that I’ve been working on, bending the frame rails back the best I can without a frame machine, but I recently met someone who’s willing to trade my pc set up for an EM1 shell and I’m definitely ok with that but my concern is the motor from my hatch being able to just drop right in because I don’t want to be without a car any longer so I’m hoping if I can swap it in a couple hours no problem then it’d be worth it. This is my first project car/honda, and when I say “I” for swapping it I mean my mechanic dad who isn’t as well versed in Hondas. I still wanna keep my hatch and put a motor in it in the future, but I bought it and unfortunately it’s too much work right now for it to be a daily. This is my first post here and I’m excited to learn more and build my first civic, thanks in advanced. Idk if my question is vague or precise enough but I can do my best to give any more knowledge about the two vehicles that I can.

It is possible, but will be more than just a couple of hours. Also there is some differences between the 96-98 and the 99-00. OBD2a vs OBD2b I think. I really do not know what those differences entails. It might mean a harness adapter for the ECU as the Y7 ECU will need to go with the Y7 in the EM1.

I get it even though it's not the smoothest direction. Would be better to get a 99-00 motor and ECU to go into the chassis. But with having a chassis available and a motor available, I get why the desire for the indicated direction. And it is not impossible, but definitely not simple either.
