Default Civic 2001 gauges went off and now car won’t start

Hi guys, hope someone can help with the current issue im having with me civic 2001.

While I was driving my car the gauges on the dashboard started to act weird, it all started with the gas gauge it wen down and the pump icon came on indicating I did not have fuel even though I know i did. When changed the gear to reverse all gauge went off completely fuel, temp, speed etc. then changed it to Drive and they turned on but while I was diving it went crazy turning off and turning on and the fuel pump light will come on and the check engine as well.

I also noticed that when turning on the direction light they will turn off and the vehicle was kinda shaking like it wanted to turn off. When i finally got home and turned the car off and tried to start it wont start any more. I turn the ignition to number 2 and see the normal lights displaying, but when trying to start it will try to start but not start.

Thank you.

Update: I waited 30-40 minutes and the car did start 2 times, at the third time it didn’t start. I did a gauge/dashboard test and it worked. The gauge issue still persist all gauge/dashboard will still go off when changing gear to reverse.

Thanks for help on this.

I did check the terminal and they are well connected. It seems that 2-3 after the issue started I didn't move the vehicle and it killed my battery (new one btw) - but I was testing the vehicle before the battery died, and notice the gauge/dashboard will turn off when changing gear to Reverse and it will turn off and turn on when using the direction/turn lights.

Had it for probably 8 years now.

About 3-4 months another vehicle damaged my left back tail light and got it replaced, not sure if its electrical short on that tail light.

You think it could be the alternator? Super strange, been searching about it but I can’t find anything.

Body shops aren't mechanical shops and they can unknowingly do mechanical things wrong when doing the body work , ie. wiring . You test an alternator by checking the voltage at the battery terminals when the car's running . You need 14+ volts . A multi tester is useful for many things , If you're going to do your own work there are certain tools you will need .

Update on this

I took my new dead battery to Autozone for recharge, when I installed the battery and started the vehicle it started fine. Changed the car to reverse and also used the turn light and the gauges/dashboard are no longer turning off. It making me think it could be maybe the alternator.

I don't trust some of the parts stores for testing batteries , I brought a new one to adverse auto and the said it was no good , I brought the same one to napa and they said it was perfectly fine , Other stores I believe can not be trusted .as they just want to sell batterie s. A multi tester is about $20** for testing the alternator . A smart charger or other batt charger can help tell you the condition of the battery . With a bad alternator the car may shut off while driving , if it's a mitsubishi alternator honda will accept it as a core if not buy OEM AC Delco , rock auto has them . Unless you like parts that last a year buy the good stuff ..

I’m having the same issue, I read somewhere that when the cluster turns off, the car basically doesn’t recognise that is on, still not sure what to check or where to start. I checked fuses so far and ran a new earth from the cluster.
