I bought my 1990 Honda Civic hatchback 32 years ago in California. We have been together 32 years and counting! I have 62,000 miles on it. I have been frustrated with a problem that has been ongoing for about 5 years.... when it gets cold outside my key gets stuck in the ignition when I am in park. I have taken it for diagnostics, and so far have had a new ignition and ignition switch replaced twice in the past 4 years. This DOES NOT fix the problem! I have spent $700 recently to do both those replacements and have the shifter console taken apart and greased up. The problem seems to be that it does not SENSE that it is in park, and therefore the key will not release. I saw a similar thread in this forum from years ago, and I thought the problem was a shifter console switch. I suggested to the repair shop that replacing that should solve the problem. But, they went ahead started with baby steps again. Now since they removed the shifter console to grease it up, my light bulb blew out. They ordered another, and put that in, but now a few weeks later it has blown out again. I am beginning to think this is some sort of electrical issue? I also think there is some connection with the emergency brake? If I move that up and down, sometime it will sense it's in park and release the key. Other times I have to jiggle the shifter a lot before it releases. If it's really cold, it takes a very long time to get my key.....very frustrating to say the least. This does not happy in the warmer weather. I have just moved to Colorado, and it is happening on a daily basis now!!! If anyone out there can suggest a once and for all fix for this issue I would be so grateful. I hate having to spend even more money to resolve this, but I guess I have no choice. I could sell my car.....every car mechanic offers to buy it the minute I drive up to their shop!!! One day maybe I will consider it, but I love my little commuter car.
