Hello all. I am new here but I have heard this is the place to be!
My first car was an 81 Accord sedan, my daily driver now is a 2012 Civic but I have been given a 78 Accord hatchback.
When I got it the 3 barrel carb had been replaced with a new 2 barrel Weber. My son got it running but is was rough and I think rich. I replaced the points, condenser, rotor, plugs wires and plugs thinking that might help but now I cant even get it started again. I do need to confirm that the points are in adjustment.
I have read conflicting information about the Weber mod. The guy I got the car from thinks it might be over jetted. The plugs were fouled so it very well might be running rich.
Any advice or pitfalls I need to look out for?
Thank you very much for any and all help.
Yes they are crap. It destroys the Honda CVCC system and has to run rich or it will not work. I actually use Weber's on the 1200/1300 engines but never the DGV. The DGV has its float bowl pivot in the wrong place So the store bought adapters need to be redesigned to turn the carb, thats not the only problem though. So its like this, the factory carb works best.... when it works! As these age there are less and less people that can work on them. So the crappy DGV setup. Will it make the car move and put around town, yes! Will it be better than a 40 year old broken Honda carb? Maybe? Will it ever be right? No! Even King Motorsports warned about the DGV carbs in their catalogs in the 1980s, yes they are that bad. For non CVCC heads the DMTR or similar work well, anything CVCC will need a Honda 3 barrel carb to work as designed. Canada had a non CVCC head on Accords, it was a common upgrade and Weber's work much better with those, if you pick the right one. They are hard to find now though. Maybe someone can source one for you. The crappy weber you have on there should not be so rich as to foul plugs. If its doing that you need to fix it or take it to a mechanic with some weber experience. Because of the cvcc system, it has to run rich, but not that rich!
That answers a lot of my questions. Thank you. It kind of looks like I’m screwed.
What about an aftermarket stand alone, throttle body fuel injection system? Would that be an option?
I do like the idea of the Canadian head. I will look into that as well.
The yes if you can find a throttle body that may work, but a d16 swap with a microsquirt or similar ecu would bring the car up to date. The cvcc head is designed to run lean on the main port and rich on the aux valve. EFI even will have better control but will not split the mixture. There was a guy named Mark Allen around Grass Valley Ca, he could get your original system working. He has some personal problems though and sort of skipped out on the world. If you can make contact that would be the easiest.
