Join a local face book JDM parts page and post up you need a smog hook up, there is tons of people who will pass your smog for $. If you're lucky they will leave your smog in a loop, and it will come back every other year as just a renewal! it's been over 9 years and my registration just comes back as a renewal! I don't even know exactly how the guy did it, but he did and I'm glad he did! My integra is fully built with a Pro Charger super charger blower on high boost it would be too much to try and make it pass smog every time.
The main difference between a CARB compliant catalyst and an EPA version is that the CARB legal ones are required to carry a longer warranty and are therefore more stoutly built. This is why they are more expensive - it's obviously slightly more complicated than that, but not by much. I tended to buy/use CARB legal converters before I even thought about living in the state just because they are noticeably better quality right out of the box.
You have two options:
- Spend the extra now and be able to go get a regular $40 smog check. They definitely look for the EO number on any aftermarket converter.
- Do what wunfstgsr did and don't worry about it. Last I checked, it was about $250-$300 to 'get a guy', which was a little less than double what it was two years prior to that. It's getting really tough for these shops to hot test and the BAR is really cracking down on them - Hence the increased cost.
Looks like the CARB legal converter is $200 more than the EPA one. So honestly, it seems like a losing path to pay a guy to cheat your test and then have that gun to your head again in two years if you keep the car and keep it stock. If it's your long-term project like above and it's not ever going to have a chance at passing a smog test anyway, that may be a different story. I'd likely just suck it up and get the legal one if I was in your shoes.
