Bad shift linkage in ek coupe?
Hi, I just bought a civic yesterday it’s a 98’ ek coupe with a d15b and an s40 tranny. The problem is it slips out of 2nd a lot. I was told it was the synchro but it also has really sloppy shifting like the worst I’ve ever felt or seen so I’m wondering if it is the shift linkage or the synchro? Could bad bushings in the shift linkage cause only the 2nd gear to slip?
Slop in the shifter is bad shifter/linkage bushings. If it's bad enough, yes it can cause the trans to slip out of gear.
I'd replace both linkage bushings first with Energy Suspension replacement bushings, and see if that helps as that's a much less labor intensive and cheaper solution than removing and tearing apart the trans. It's possible there could be more damage internally though.

It's not a bad idea. Honestly I've never paid much attention to them, especially the dust covers I normally just give a good wipe down and reinstall.
If the plastic ball cage looks beaten up/worn, then yeah I'd replace it, or if you just happen to be able to get one cheap. I don't think they're very expensive.

Bushings didn’t fix the issue so I’ll need to either replace or repair the tranny. I have a d15b engine so a d16y8 tranny will fit on the d15b engine is that correct? What’s your thoughts on the situation should I replace or repair the tranny? I don’t have any experience repairing transmissions so I don’t want to mess something up if I take it apart.

The transmission is actually very easy to work on. Seems most likely the wire ring may be completely gone the rides on the synchro causing it to pop out of gear. After time the sleeves teeth that engage onto the dog teeth of the gear get mauled up causing it to be rough and sharp. Every time you shift into gear, the sleeve slips over the wire ring of the synchro that helps hold it in gear but if there is bad wear, it will eventually destroy the ring and could rip it off. If you have replaced all the bushing in the shift linkage and it's still a problem, either honda or synchrotec may have your replacement parts.
The main things you want to replace with the tranny apart are all the seals, synchros, rings, sleeves and possibly the input shaft bearing. Inspect the hubs too for any damage or wear.
Use some honda bond ht to seal the case back together using a VERY THIN layer around the case. Use too much and it will leave little beads of sealant in the case on the edge of where it was compressed.
You can get these parts for pretty cheap and would be better than hoping you get a better used tranny. Couple hours or less of work and a day for sealant curing and you'd be good to go.
Hope that helps..

I found out i have a d16y8 transmission so would this be the right kit I need? https://ipgparts.com/products/honda-...on-synchro-kit
also will I need any special tools or anything to rebuild the tranny other then just basic ratchets and wrenches and stuff? Thanks for all the help I really appreciate it.

Just wondering how I would know what size the speedo gear is? There’s a 40mm and a 35mm synchrotech kit but I want to order the kit as soon as possible instead of having to take apart the tranny then wait for the parts to come. Sorry for all the questions I’m only 19 so I’m new to tranny rebuilding😅
