88 Civic Timing belt change allowed ignition and idle still another problem..
Hello Everyone, I'm new to the forum and I have browsed through the stickys and some of the posts, but I just can't seem to pinpoint a good answer to my issue. I acquired an 88 civic D15 engine that wouldn't start (by not starting I mean no combustion motor turned over fine.
After troubleshooting I found that the timing belt tensioner was leaving the chat so to speak. I spent a great deal of time making sure the crank and cam were put in time correctly. The bolt to the timing tensioner was so bad I had to keensert the threads in the block. Once all said and done I fired the car up and it purrs like a kitten.
The only problem I have now, is if I use more than say a quarter of the throttle the car wants to bog down and die. I have tried advancing and retarding the ignition timing to accommodate without a timing light
and I have replaced the fuel filter. I have a distributor on order. I was just wondering if anyone knows of a thread or a direction to point me in for some other checks that I can do. I dont know much about the injector or throttle position sensors on these cars.
If gag the throttle to instantly increase revolutions you can hear the intake pulling air like a vaccum. it's almost as if it's starving for fuel. Fuel pump seems to be working. I'm a little confused because it's not throwing any cel codes.. If I leave it at idle it will idle Like the day it was purchased. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Do you think I'm off on my timing? I only had the crank gear timing mark and the camshaft gear stamps to go off of all other marks disappeared years ago I am assuming.
Just to clarify the car did not run when I received it so I'm not sure if there is another underlying issue besides the timing belt.

Check cam timing. The timing gear mark is only for the D16, not your D15.
With the crank at TDC, position the cam gear so you can see the "UP" and the two horizontal marks parallel with the split in the rocker housing.
Rotate three times, by hand, then check it again.
