1990 Prelude Losing Power - PLEASE HELP!!!
1990 Prelude SR Auto with the B21A1 engine. Speedo and Odo have worked intermittently for some time. Recently replaced the coolant temp sensor and now have the following problem:
Severe loss of revs and engine power once engine is warmed up. Getting a flashing S3 light as soon as I start driving, and once the engine is warmed up, I slowly lose power. Even if I shift to Neutral and push the gas pedal I get no throttle response and the revs slowly die down. Floor it or pump it and the engine catches and grabs a couple of gears, bucks and jumps, there is a bang/thump from the engine, it runs for 5 seconds or so then the whole process repeats. I am getting codes for 4 on the left ECU indicator light (CrankPositionSensor); 1 (O2 Content "A"); and 17 (Vehicle SpeedSensor) on the Right ECU indicator light. The funny thing is, that when the engine warms up and starts to become undriveable due to power loss, occasionally the CEL light comes on in my cluster, and then the car runs great, although it runs hot and I can smell a slight burning smell when I park. I have been told it could be anything from a bad cat converter, to CPS, to O2 sensor(s), to VSS, to MAP sensor, to thermostat, to tranny problems to ignition coils ...just trying to figure out where to start. This power loss happened one or two times (isolated incidents) over the past 20 years but yhe issues started in earnest after I replaced the coolant temp sensor due to a hard starting issue. Any guesses as to what to try first? OR can I eliminate any of the above? Florida car in awesome shape so really really want to keep her on the road.
