F22A6 valve lash
Hi. I just had to replace the cam in my '93 Accord EX with the F22A6 engine because the cam gear end at the mounting bolt threads broke. I caught it while replacing the front seal before it did any damage to the engine and it ran fine just prior to that. I put in a very nice used cam I had from a spare motor. I also used the rocker arm assembly from the spare motor as I figured that if there was much if any wear, the cam lobe to rocker arm wear would be the one not to mix up IMHO. I correctly (I believe ;-) set the valve lash to the factory recommended .010/.012 and now I think the valve train at idle seems a tad louder than I remember it being before. I don't notice any more noise once I give it any throttle, sounds fine then. Are these engines always a bit noisy at idle and I'm just being overly critical now that I'm paying more attention as I just made the adjustments? Has anyone gone a bit tighter on the lash to help quiet things down and possibly add a few HP? If so, how tight can one go without risking burning valves on a daily driver that never sees over 4,000 RPM? Thanks in advance for your thoughts, Bill.
I usually go on the tighter side of the specs with the intake @ 0.008 & the exhaust @ 0.010 and have never had any issues. That being said, I have found these engines tend to have a bit of a valve train tick at idle and when cold even with the slightly tighter specs.
