87 Civic Motor Mount Question
Hi, everyone.
I am currently nipple deep in a project car I got from my brother. It's a base model 87 civic. Auto, unfortunately. Maybe swap some day if I feel really ambitious and have more time. I know it's a stupid amount of work and I'll probably never do it, I just really miss my old manual CRX HF. For now, though, I bought it mostly to have as a backup car, as a relatively easy and cheap fixer-upper project, and for my grandma to have something more practical than her current vehicle to drive around town during the week. It's in remarkably good condition, it's only got one superficial spot of rust on one of the fenders, some rock chips, and the interior is absolutely spotless (the old owners somehow tolerated that dashboard carpet cover crap for 30 years and so the vinyl is in as close to brand new condition as you can possibly get on a car this old).
Under the hood is a different story, though. Short version is I'm replacing, rebuilding, and or re-doing the seals on most everything except the actual motor and tranny. So far so good, it's not the first time I've done this with a mid 80's Civic so it's all fairly familiar to me. The one problem I'm running into, though, is the motor mounts. I can see that the front motor mount has very cracked rubber, and I assume that the other mounts are in about the same shape. This confirms my suspicions that the motor mounts are causing the noticeable "clunk" sound on turns (not like a CV failing, different sound). The problem is that new OEM motor mounts are nonexistent, and it seems that all car groups and (real) articles on the entirety of the internet have come together in a big kumbaya moment to scream "don't ever buy aftermarket engine mounts, they are always bad" at anyone who will listen.
So, how true is this? Do I realistically have any choice? The only alternative I've been able to find online (or from auto parts stores) would be to get a performance polyurethane kit. The price isn't really an obstacle, the problem is that I'm not so sure I really want to feel the "raw power" of this base model 4 banger. But, honestly, if the aftermarket mounts really are that bad, then I might spring for them. If the performance mounts are overkill, then which of the commonly available aftermarket companies making mounts is least terrrible?
I have also seen a post or two on some other forums about kits to rebuild these mounts by basically taking the old mounts, digging out the rubber, and filling them with a 2 part polyurethane resin. They said this as if there is a well-known technique for this, but when I try to search this online or in the forums all I get are dead links, people just referring to this method as if it's a kit (but not actually naming the product or the company), or clickbait articles telling me that "motor mounts are very easy to install click here sexy singles in your area download more horsepower in 5 minutes do you suffer from erectile dysfunction?" which honestly haven't told me anything that I didn't already know.
Thanks!

rockauto, amazon, etc is the only game in town at this point for many parts. There are some NOS parts coming out of Bali and Malaysia, but they're VERY expensive; they're listed on the various honda parts groups on facebook. Other option is removing your stock mounts, making a silicone mold from it, and casting your own out of polyeurthane, though that's not for the faint of heart either.
