starter problems b swap ef hatch
Having problems with starter. It clicks when I turn key but won’t spin. Almost like it gets stuck. Got a new starter. No change, got a new battery no change, got new alternator, new ignition switch, and new starter relay. Still not working. When I click it multiple times it ends up working and turning over the car. i even cleaned and made sure all the grounds were tight. what could it be?
I had that problem long ago and never figured it out. The ignition switch isn't providing enough current. I did replace it with no luck. Has to be in the wiring between the switch and the starter. Probably a bad connection. I ended up wiring a relay to supply battery voltage and it starts every time. Should probably look into fixing it again.
The ignition switch only provides the signal to the starter. The actual power is provided via an unfused connection directly to the battery. You can test by applying a 12v signal to the starter to see where the issue resides. If the issue is indeed the starter, I would check that the starter has a clean surface between it and the transmission and possibly add a temporary ground from the starter directly to the battery. You can also test that you are getting 12v to the signal wire and use a current meter to measure how many amps are being pulled over the signal wire then measure the resistance between the ignition switch and the starter signal wire (with the battery disconnected).
the ignition switch trips the solenoid in the starter which in turn uses a straight connection from the battery to actually run. All you need to do is jump a wire from the battery to the ignition switch input on the starter and see if it runs
